Towards Consensus: Suggested Foundational Building Blocks for Arts Entrepreneurship Research and Pedagogy

Abstract

The continued creation of new arts entrepreneurship programs at the university level highlights the need for consensus among arts entrepreneurship researchers and educators about what we are teaching and researching. This article explores the possibility of consensus among business entrepreneurship scholars and arts entrepreneurship scholars, and suggests that a general conception of entrepreneurship is a unifying principle and foundational building block. A theory of entrepreneurship, effectuation, is presented as another building block for arts entrepreneurship research and education, resulting in potentially profound implications. Finally, a proposed unified vision for the field of arts entrepreneurship education is presented, formulated from existing arts entrepreneurship scholarship.

Author Biography

Jonathan James Gangi, Pennsylvania State University

Jonathan J. Gangi was appointed the College of Arts and Architecture’s inaugural Professor in Arts Entrepreneurship in 2014. He is an affiliate faculty member in the School of Music, offering instruction in classical guitar.

Gangi works with academic faculty across the college to develop new courses and programs that focus on “the business of the arts," and on arts entrepreneurship and innovation. He also teaches courses and provides guidance to academic units in developing, implementing and coordinating college-wide internship and mentoring programs.

He holds bachelor and master of music degrees in classical guitar performance from the University of Akron, and a D.M.A. from the University of South Carolina. Prior to accepting the position at Penn State, he served as a lecturer in arts entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University and faculty advisor to that school’s Arts Entrepreneurship Student Group. He is a founding member of the Arts Entrepreneurship Academic Society, established in July 2013. He is also a member of the College Music Society’s Committee on Music Entrepreneurship Education, and assisted in developing and teaching the Music Entrepreneurship Summer Certificate Program at North Carolina State University. He has presented and served as a panelist at a conference of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

While a student at the University of Akron, Gangi founded the Rosario Guitar Festival and Competition, and in that role has secured major grants and corporate sponsorship from companies such as Westinghouse. He has performed on South Carolina public radio and on National Public Radio’s The Front Row, among other performances.

Gangi is a member of the Association of Arts Administration Educators, United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, International Council for Small Business, College Music Society, and Guitar Foundation of America.
